India's First Locally Assembled Luxury EV Is Going To Be Volvo XC40

Volvo Cars India announced that it will locally assemble the upcoming XC40 Recharge EV at its facility in Hoskote near Bangalore, Karnataka. The Volvo XC40 Recharge will be the first luxury EV to be locally assembled in India. The all-electric Volvo XC40 Recharge will be launched in India in July and the deliveries will begin in October 2022.

The Volvo factory in Hoskote started the local assembly in 2017. Presently, the plant assembles the Volvo XC40, XC60, XC90, and S90, making this the first fully electric vehicle manufactured locally in India by Volvo. The Volvo XC40 Recharge is currently available in two versions: one runs on a 300-kW all-wheel-drive system with a 78-kWh battery (75 kWh net) while the front-wheel-drive model features a 170-kW powertrain output and a 70-kWh battery (67 kWh net).

According to Electrive, the Volvo XC40 Recharge sports a 78kWh battery pack that allows the electric SUV to travel for a claimed 418 kilometres on a single charge. The Volvo XC40 Recharge is offered in two different guises - a single motor version front-wheel drive and an all-wheel drive option with dual motors. The single motor variant of the Volvo XC40 Recharge sports a single motor sending 228bhp and 329Nm of peak torque through the front axle.

Volvo claims that the XC40 Recharge SUV can recharge its battery pack from 10 to 80 percent in just 40 minutes when connected to a 150kW DC fast charger. When connected to a 50kW DC fast charger, the 10 to 80 percent charge time increases to 2 hours. Home charging with the onboard 11kW fast AC charger from 0 to 100 percent will take around 8 to 10 hours. This will allow Volvo to be fierce with its pricing, which is something that it will require to do to exceed competition from the Kia EV6 and Hyundai's upcoming Ioniq 5.
